Do you know which demographics use social media the most? It varies based on social network and the stats are very interesting.
We’ve received some research from the Pew Research Center and our friends over at Docstoc created a beautiful infographic from the new data showing social media use by demographic and by social network.
Overall, more women use social media than men at 71% vs. 62% respectively. More Hispanic-Americans use social media (72%) than African-Americans (68%), who use social media more tan White-Americans (65%). The highest percentages of social media use come from younger age groups, those in an urban setting (defined as higher population density), those with some college education and those with a low income.
What I find interesting is the social media use by demographic specifically by social network. Here are a few demographic user profiles of some of the largest social networks:
Rural residents, women, white, some level of college education or higher, middle to higher income.
Women, 18-29 year-olds.
African-American, Hispanic, urban residents, 18-29 year-olds, women
18-29 year-olds, African-American, urban residents
What are the most popular social networks according to the data from Pew Research Center study? Not surprisingly, Facebook is still the top dog with 67% of online adults using the social network. LinkedIn comes in second with 20%; Twitter in third with 16%; Pinterest in fourth with 15%, Instagram in fifth with 13% and Tumblr in sixth with 6%.
Are you surprised by any of these results or are they more or less what you thought?
